How it Works

Tips for Reference Photos

The quality of your reference photo plays a huge role in the final piece—so choosing the right one matters!

  • Clear & not blurry: Crisp details help me capture your pet accurately

  • Straight-on angle: Photos taken at eye level work best (avoid shots from above)

  • Good lighting: Natural light is best—avoid harsh shadows or filters

  • Focus on the face & chest: Especially the eyes, expression, and unique markings

  • True-to-life colors: Choose photos that reflect your pet’s real fur coloring

  • Pose & personality: Pick a photo with an expression that feels like them

While I require at least 1 Primary photo, you’re welcome to send up to 2 Supporting Photos —I’m happy to help choose the one I think will look best as a painting!

A happy medium-sized dog with black, white, and tan fur sitting on grass, looking at the camera, wearing a black collar.
Smiling dog with black and white fur, one eye black, ears erect, sitting on grass with a blue plastic pool in the background.

✓ These are both great reference photos! They’re well-lit with no harsh shadows, taken straight on, clear, and capture their expressions nicely.

Close-up of a black French Bulldog lying on a blanket, with a dark wooden background, large ears, and expressive eyes.
A black-and-white English Springer Spaniel sitting on a wooden bench, panting with its tongue hanging out, outdoors with grass and buildings in the background.

✓ These reference photos also work really well as side profiles, if you are wanting that look!
